Schitz Weddingov.......
No no, one of us Schitzers is not about to take the plunge (gulp), rather, I had the fortune of attending a ceremony of life unity over the weekend and it got me to thinking. Not about tying the proverbial knot, but about music of course. Wedding DJ's are not known for dropping current jams or blowing the crowd away with their technical ability and it is safe to say that the usual tracks will get a spin. The famous 'Chicken Dance' gets granny on the floor shaking tail with her grandchildren and 'Don't Stop Believin' by Journey will have crazy cousin Jeb slurring out every word from the bar.
The wedding I attended was predictable in the early goings as the dj wanted to get the party started nice and recognizable. 'Billie Jean' was always a crowd pleaser before it became so relevant and now more than ever gets the sentimental vote. 'Footloose' will create a line of hand raised relations as the bride and groom do the 'Bacon' walk down the gauntlet. 'Y.M.C.A.' may be lost on the children of today but they quickly adapt to mom and dad flailing letters in remembrance of their cocaine fueled disco days. Par for the course.
Then came something I didn't expect. The DJ threw on a Girl Talk CD about an hour in and I stood back to watch the horror of the grey hairs as the tempo climbed and the genre shift was going to be fast and hip hop laced. To my surprise the floor filled up and the party was in full swing. Something about The Emotions "Best of My Love" into LCD Soundsystems "Daft Punk is Playing at My House" into The Breeders "Cannonball" into Stevie's "My Cherie Amour" into DJ Funk's "Booty Bounce" into Bratney's "Slave 4 U" into Wrex-N-Effect "Rump Shaker" into Elastica's "Connection" into Ciara and Luda's "Oh" simply speaks to everyone. Props to the DJ for taking the risk of geriatric mutiny and kudos to Girl Talk for saving musical integrity for me one night.
So I got to thinking about some of the classic wedding tunes there are out there and how some of the 'oldies but goodies' have been given a facelift. Here are some choice tracks I pulled out of the crate of mash and edits that remind me of the holiest of matrimonies. Beep Beep Beep? lol we're running out of names it would seem...
So it's almost time for another Tiga album...except I'm not sure if i can handle another one. Don't get me wrong, i do dig quite a few tiga remixes...especially his earlier works before he decided he was a bryan ferry. and his first album was good..but wouldn't anything by soulwax, jesper dhalback, zombie nation (even mateo murphy back in the day) be good? sometimes I wish the album would be also available without the tiga bits....just sayin'
